What’s my Why?

Today’s post — my 50th to date — is a short reflection on why I’m doing this.  By this, I mean why am I blogging?  Why do I share the story of my journey?  I find it’s important to know our “why” for anything we do.  It reveals our intentions and keeps us focused on having the right motivation.  Even as I have discussed some of my most vulnerable moments, most of what I’ve been posting here has been the best life I’ve ever lived.  I do my best when sharing those moments to put it in the larger context where things weren’t always that way.  Even so, I often worry about coming across as bragging – or worse yet, insensitive to those out there who may not feel like they are in this same space right now.  That’s the last thing I want.  In fact, my why is quite the opposite of that.

My why, as it comes to this blog, is simply to let others know that you can get from your lowest moments to your highest ones — and that nothing about that journey is ever linear or easy.  The destination I set out for was never to get to where I am today.  At the beginning of it, that would have simply felt like I was setting myself up for failure — something I knew a lot about.  If anything, the first destination I set out to reach was simply to stop getting worse.  I was a locomotive moving in the wrong direction, so it was already a Superman-worthy task to stop that train.  Once that happened and the train got a nudge in the other direction, there was no stopping it.  My why is because I want others to know that.  I want others to know that making that move in the right direction can change your world in ways that seem impossible — without even making the impossible your goal.  That’s my why and it’s what allows me to share my best days without guilt.  They were born out of my lowest days.  My why is because this all takes hard work.  For me, it’s a commitment to getting in the fitness training, recovery, and sleep, all while working a busy day job.  For others it could be something entirely different, but the commitment to working hard is real.  Your details are different than mine, but it’s the details that matter.  My why is because I want everyone to know that it’s all possible.
